Uncertainty exists on availability of cervical cap, distributor says."

Abstract

PIP: Many consumers and clinicians remain unaware that the Prentif Cavity Rim cervical cap, which has been improved, is available on the US market as of late 1988. The distributor, Cervical Cap Limited, is preparing to send information pamphlets on the cervical cap to 30,000 obstetricians and gynecologists. These pamphlets will advise physicians as to when and where training sessions on the cap are held in their areas. About 90 sites in 43 states offer training in cervical cap fitting to practitioners. The Prentif Cavity Rim cap is available in 4 sizes. About 20% of all women cannot be fitted with a cap because of problems such as an anteflexed uterus, a recent abnormal Pap smear, or some type of vaginal infection. An additional 6-10% of women cannot be fitted with a cap because of improper fit or the patient's inability to master proper insertion and removal of the device. The cost of the cap to clinicians is $24.50. Women using the cap must return in 3 months for a repeat Pap smear because 1 study showed a slightly higher incidence of abnormal Pap smear results after use of the cap.
