Health Syst Lead. 1997 Apr;4(4):4-13.

Abstract

Recent studies have shown that certain conditions are better managed by specialists than by primary care physicians. Patients are telling systems they want increased access to specialist care. In the wake of these developments, HMOs are moving away from gatekeeper models and returning control to specialists. How are specialists faring in this new climate? Those willing to get organized and manage risk seem to have the edge, say these analysts and proponents of specialist care.
