Fed Regist. 1988 Jan 21;53(13):1621-9.

Abstract

This rule implements section 9311(a) of the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1986, which sets forth the circumstances under which the periodic interim payment (PIP) method is available for services furnished by hospitals and other providers. Generally, inpatient hospital services furnished by hospitals excluded from the prospective payment system, as well as skilled nursing facility services, home health services, and hospice care services may be paid for on a PIP basis. With certain exceptions, inpatient hospital services furnished by prospective payment hospitals are not eligible for payment on a PIP basis.
