The wise physician

Fam Med. 1999 Sep;31(8):586-8.

Abstract

I have learned a great deal from all of my patients, including the importance of just being there. I have come to realize and experience the positive effect of sensitivity (empathy) to my patients' pains and fears. And, finally, I understand the difference between curing and healing. I continue to strive to be the role model set for me by my family physician, who taught me to understand the importance that death and dying play in our lives and the need for caring even if curing is not possible. Dr Dumond's presence, his being there, was just as important to my family as the instruments he carried in his black bag. The wise physician understands the importance of the doctor-patient relationship in the healing process and is willing to invest himself/herself in this encounter. The wise physician makes the most of these magic moments.
