AIDS: California has issued new certification requirements for phlebotomists. The law was enacted after [name removed] was discovered reusing needles while working for [name removed] Clinical Laboratories. Certification will require 40 hours of classroom work, 40 hours of hands-on practice, and 50 successful blood draws. Currently licensed and working phlebotomy technicians have 3 years to become certified. Unlicensed technicians must obtain certification by January 1, 2001. [Name removed] was fined $102,000 and faces class-action and individual lawsuits as a result of [name removed]'s actions.
