Global devastation: sub-Saharan Africa

Women Alive. 2000 Winter:14.

Abstract

AIDS: The prevalence of HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa is devastating and counts for two-thirds of the total world population living with HIV/AIDS. The Subtype C strain of HIV present in this region is hastening the transmission and death rate of those infected. The stigma associated with HIV causes many women to hide their positive status and continue to spread the disease. To address the crisis in this area, Secure The Future, in alliance with several African nations, Bristol Myers Squibb, and others, is providing grants for medical research of women and children. A community outreach and education fund was also established. More help is needed, and it is hoped that other pharmaceutical companies will offer assistance.
