A new approach to fertility control: long-acting injectable progesterones

Adv Fertil Control. 1968;3(3):41-3.

Abstract

PIP: Medroxyprogesterone acetate (Depo-MPA), norethisterone ananthate (NEE), chlormandinone acetate, and 19-nor-hydroxyprogesterone derivatives were evaluated as longacting injectable steroids for contraception. With Depo-MPA 300 mg intramuscularly every 6 months and NEE 200 mg every 3 months there were no pregnancies. Fertility returned in 3 to 8 months post-NEE therapy and 6 to 14 months post-Depo-MPA therapy. Injectable progesterones can be given immediately postpartum and postabortum and do not inhibit lactation or affect the nursing baby's health. Chlormadinone acetate and the 19-nor hydroxyprogesterone derivatives appeared to have fewer side effects and improved tolerance and acceptability. Clinical properties and antiestrogenic and antifertility affects of Depo-MPA and NEE are given. Patients with a history of gallbladder disease or jaundice of pregnancy had no exacerbation of their symptoms with progestagens alone.
