IUD and the pill: a comparative study

Contracept Deliv Syst. 1980 Oct;1(4):341-7.

Abstract

PIP: A retrospective study of 504 women attending a Swedish family planning clinic compared the acceptance of IUD and (OCs) oral contraceptives. Neither the continuation rate nor the frequency of discontinuation due to adverse effects differed significantly between the 2 groups. The continuation after 12 months was 80% for IUD users and 86% for OC users. The discontinuation frequency because of adverse effects was 16% in the IUD group and 12% in the OC group. The expulsion rate in the IUD group was 5%. Both age and parity were correlated to the acceptance of IUDs. Certain statistical methods were applied to analyze the importance of parity and age respectively; however, no significant differences were discovered.
