Determinants of contraceptive method choice in Sri Lanka: an update of a 1987 survey

Asia Pac Popul J. 1991 Sep;6(3):25-40.

Abstract

PIP: This 1987 update study of the sociocultural and demographic determinants of contraceptive method choice in Sri Lanka reveals a striking consistency with previous investigations of the same issue. In 1975 and 1982, researchers conducted similar studies of the determinants of contraceptive method choice. These studies showed that method choice was primarily a function of demographic factors related to the couple's family-building stages rather than socioeconomic factors, suggesting that in Sri Lanka there were few socioeconomic barriers to accessibility and choice of contraceptive methods. For the update, researchers analyzed the data from the 1987 Demographic and Health Survey, a sample which included 5,449 currently married women between the ages of 15-49. As in the previous studies, the 1987 study four possible outcomes of contraceptive choice: not currently using a method, using a traditional method, using a temporary modern method, and sterilization. The researchers employed a multinominal logistic model as the analytical technique. The results of the analysis reveal a remarkable consistency with the previous studies. Both demographic and socioeconomic factors were important determinants of contraceptive use, evident in the fact that those who use contraception are not only motivated by their family-building stage, but also more likely to be urban, Sinhalese, and better educated. However, the study also found that family-cycle goals, rather than socioeconomic factors, continue to have the greatest influence over method choice, which explains the fact that there is a virtual lack of differentials among users of temporary modern and traditional methods. These findings suggest that government programs have not succeeded in promoting the sue of temporary modern methods of contraception.
