PIP: As a result of her militant views on women's rights and explicit references to female sexuality, the Bangladeshi writer and poet, Taslima Nasrin, has been forced to flee her country. THe Islamic right-wing has called for Nasrin's execution and cites her call for an overhaul of the Koran as an example of the danger of allowing women to learn to read and write. Nasrin's case has created turmoil, including street battles and demonstrations, throughout Bangladesh and she has been offered asylum by foreign ministers of the European Union. Nasrin has written, "Everywhere I look, I see women being mistreated and their oppression justified in the name of religion. It is not my moral responsibility to protest? Some men would keep women in chains, veiled, illiterate, and in the kitchen." The same religious leaders who forced Nasrin into hiding have attacked reproductive health care and literacy programs throughout Bangladesh.
