PIP: The International Planned Parenthood Federation Africa Region (IPPFAR) has made considerable progress since it was established in 1971, yet there continue to be millions of Africans who are without information or services to assist in the regulation of their fertility. Although debate goes on in Africa concerning the relevance of family planning, the policies, programs, and projects identified as needed and implemented thus far have been motivated by the genuine belief that family planning is relevant to both development and to the improvement of the quality of human life. The IPPFAR has focused on clarifying to family planning associations the linkages between family planning, demography, and development. Stress has been on the fact that family planning alone cannot reduce the high population growth rates characterizing many African countries. Consequently, population education and information at all levels is ranked as 1 of the Region's priority needs. Currently, IPPFAR funds family planning activities in the countries of Benin, Ethiopia, The Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritius, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zaire, and Zambia. In the future focus will be on strengthening existing family planning associations and developing family planning activities where there are none. Emphasis will continue to be on the concept of family planning as a means of improving the standards of family health and quality of human life.
