Promoting informed choice

AVSC News. 1997 Winter;35(4):3.

Abstract

PIP: Informed choice in family planning means ensuring that clients have a variety of contraceptive methods from which to choose and the information needed to choose a method and use it successfully. The client must also be taught what to do if problems develop from method use. However, far from all programs in all countries currently ensure informed choice in the provision of family planning services. A history of informed choice abuses, including coercion, force, and the aggressive targeting of certain groups, has plagued family planning, often causing mistrust and clients' avoidance of such services. Current violations of a client's right to informed choice tend to be more subtle and difficult to document than they used to be. Abuses nonetheless occur, both purposefully and unknowingly. Efforts to ensure informed choice must therefore focus upon policies and informed consent forms, while also learning what clients are actually told and offered. Counseling and training, research projects, and client focus are discussed.
