Eliminating structural and racial barriers: a plausible solution to eliminating health disparities

J Natl Black Nurses Assoc. 2003 Jun;14(1):57-65.

Abstract

It is essential to critically and systematically analyze the literature to determine what impact the historical effects of individual and institutional racism have had on the prevailing health disparities across racial/ethnic groups including African-Americans, Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans, and American Indians. Moreover given the historical significance of institutional racism, a review of health disparities across ethnic minority groups could ultimately ayugment understanding in order to ensure culturally competent health care to these vulnerable populations.
