Abstract

Type I diabetes develops following an attack of the immune system that destroys the cells secreting insulin. Death of these cells however requires many intracellular mechanisms that are dependent of the insulin-secreting cells themselves. The pivotal role that the insulin-secreting cells play in their own destruction starts to be uncovered, and these new mechanisms are the target for a whole battery of future drugs.
