Methadone and buprenorphine added to the WHO list of essential medicines

HIV AIDS Policy Law Rev. 2005 Dec;10(3):23-4.

Abstract

In March 2005, methadone and buprenorphine were recently added as "complimentary" medicines to the 14th Model List of Essential Medicines (LEM) released by the World Health Organization (WHO). Studies have shown that these drugs increase adherence to antiretroviral therapy as well as reduce the risk of HIV infection among injection drug users (IDUs).
