Wobble position modified nucleosides evolved to select transfer RNA codon recognition: a modified-wobble hypothesis

Biochimie. 1991 Nov;73(11):1345-9. doi: 10.1016/0300-9084(91)90163-u.

Abstract

While recognized that some wobble exists in the base pairing of the first base of the tRNA anticodon with the third of the codon, specific base modifications have evolved to select particular codons. This modified-wobble theory would be exemplified by a single codon recognition imposed on the anticodon by modification of the tRNA wobble position nucleoside.
