Abstract

Patients with various kinds of intestinal illnesses sometimes suffer not only abdominal symptoms, but also joint involvement, leading to a reduction in quality of life. Diseases leading to inflammatory joint involvement such as inflammatory bowel disease, Whipple's disease or surgical intestinal bypass, are classified as enteropathic arthritis. In all cases, disrupted barrier function of the intestine causes activation of the immune system and inflammation of joints.
