The role of mitochondrial dysfunction and drug safety

IDrugs. 2009 Nov;12(11):706-10.

Abstract

Mitochondria are the energy powerhouses of cells and are essential for cell survival. Evidence demonstrates that mitochondria are the off-targets of many drugs belonging to a diverse array of classes. This feature review discusses the mechanisms by which drugs impair mitochondrial function, and describes some of the high-throughput methods being used to screen for drug-induced mitochondrial impairment.
