Objective: To study the effects of high-sugar and high-fat diet on the growth and carbohydrate, lipid metabolism of Wistar rats.
Methods: According to their weight and fasting blood glucose, twenty male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 2 groups (n = 10): control group and experimental group, and were fed by normal diet and high-sugar and high-fat diet respectively for 6 weeks. The growth curve of rats and food utilization were observed, the parameters of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism were measured.
Results: After 6 weeks feeding, the body weight, food utilization, body weight accounted for the percentage of visceral fat, serum total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol of experimental group were significantly higher than those of control group (P < 0.05), and serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol of experimental group was significantly lower than that of control group (P < 0.01) . The fasting plasma glucose (FPG) of two groups was no significant difference. The glucose tolerance of experimental rats was impaired, the area under the curve of glucose was significantly higher than that of control rats.
Conclusions: High-sugar and high-fat diet could cause the enhance of central accumulation of body fat, and increased serum total cholesterol, resulting in decreased glucose tolerance ability for type 2 diabetes in the process of an important risk factor.
