Mexico decriminalizes small-scale drug possession

Abstract

On 20 August 2009, the Mexican government adopted legislation decriminalizing possession of small amounts of drugs. According to the new law, possession amounts for "personal and immediate use"--defined as up to half a gram of cocaine, five grams of marijuana, 50 milligrams of heroin, 40 milligrams of methamphetamine and 0.015 milligrams of LSD--will not lead to criminal prosecution.
