Big, small or mezzo? Lessons from science studies for the ongoing debate about 'big' versus 'little' research projects

EMBO Rep. 2010 Jun;11(6):420-3. doi: 10.1038/embor.2010.67. Epub 2010 May 14.

Abstract

Whether scientists like it or not, big science is here to stay. The authors argue that, instead of discussing its problems and risks for small research projects, scientists and funders should devise new ways of how to use and combine small, ‘mezzo' and big research projects to achieve maximum efficiency.
