Excerpt

The platelet is a circulating anuclear fragment of a bone marrow megakaryocyte, 3 to 4 μm in diameter, with limited synthetic capability. The mean normal platelet count is between 250,000 and 260,000 cells/mm3, although there is a wide range of accepted normal values in most laboratories that extend as low as 150,000 to as high as 400,000/mm3.
