This Statistical Brief presents data from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) on characteristics of live hospital births (i.e., newborns excluding stillbirths) in the United States in 2011. Demographic characteristics of newborns in 2008 are compared to data from 2011. Hospital utilization and costs are compared for selected birth outcomes and clinical conditions for 2011. All differences between estimates noted in the text are statistically significant at the .001 or better probability level.
