Lifting the Mist on Gastric Stem Cells

Cell Stem Cell. 2016 Jan 7;18(1):7-9. doi: 10.1016/j.stem.2015.12.008.

Abstract

In a recent issue of Cancer Cell, Hayakawa et al. (2015) demonstrate that Mist1(+) gastric stem cells are supported by a specialized niche composed of Cxcl12(+) endothelium and Wnt5a-producing Cxcr4(+) innate lymphoid cells. In diffuse-type gastric cancer this perivascular stem cell niche is expanded and can be exploited for cancer therapy.
