Abstract

Purpose: To report vitreous hemorrhage as the initial manifestation of familial exudative vitreoretinopathy (FEVR).

Methods: Case report.

Results: An 8-year-old child presented with vitreous hemorrhage leading to the discovery of large neovascularization. Fundus examination and fluorescein angiography showed the typical appearance of FEVR. A genetic study confirmed the diagnosis. Treatment by laser photocoagulation was performed with good recovery of visual acuity.

Conclusion: Ophthalmologists should be aware of familial exudative vitreoretinopathy (FEVR) so as not to misdiagnose this sight-threatening disease.
