The Female Athlete Triad

Phys Sportsmed. 1994 Jan;22(1):60-8. doi: 10.1080/00913847.1994.11710446.

Abstract

In brief Though appropriate exercise has many health benefits for women, there is a point of diminishing returns. Young female athletes driven to excel in their chosen sports are at risk of developing a potentially fatal triad of disorders. By recognizing the connection between disordered eating, amenorrhea, and osteoporosis, physicians can help athletic young women stay active while avoiding significant morbidity.
