As improvements in atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk reduction in adults’ plateau, and risk factors accumulate in youth, the focus is shifting to children as the future of ASCVD prevention. Abnormal lipid levels are relatively common in the pediatric population, and effective treatments are available, thereby supporting the need to screen children for abnormal lipids. Recent data suggest that lipid screening is performed among youth, but neither detects the expected proportion of affected individuals nor translates into higher rates of therapy. Future work should build upon current screening efforts to overcome identified barriers to lipid screening, aiming to prevent ASCVD events and maintain ideal ASCVD health throughout the life course.
