Statins are inhibitors of hydroxymethylglutaryl-CoA reductase enzyme and lower total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and triglyceride concentrations. The FDA-approved statins include atorvastatin, rosuvastatin, simvastatin, pravastatin, fluvastatin, lovastatin, and pitavastatin. Individuals at high risk for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease require more aggressive management strategies, including higher-intensity statin therapy.
