Elevated Serum Midkine in Patients With Acute Pancreatitis

Am J Med Sci. 2017 Dec;354(6):548-552. doi: 10.1016/j.amjms.2017.07.010. Epub 2017 Jul 25.

Abstract

Background: Midkine (MK) is reported to be involved in the pathogenesis of numerous pathologies, but the expression of MK in acute pancreatitis (AP) has not been well studied and documented.

Methods: In this study, the temporal changes of serum MK were assessed in 97 patients with AP by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.

Results: The concentration of serum MK increased along with the severity of AP. Serum MK level increased more significantly in patients with organ failure than in those without organ failure. A more obvious elevation of serum MK level was also observed in patients with pancreatic necrosis.

Conclusion: Serum MK might be a useful marker in the clinical diagnosis of AP.
