Functional Dyspepsia and Irritable Bowel Syndrome: Beyond Rome IV

Dig Dis. 2017:35 Suppl 1:14-17. doi: 10.1159/000485408. Epub 2018 Feb 8.

Abstract

Background: The correct diagnosis of functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) is quite a challenge. The overlaps between syndromes can complicate the interpretation of clinical data.

Summary: The incidence of functional digestive disorders and irritable bowel syndrome are still underestimated with the currently applied diagnostic tools, and the management of the seemingly elusive disease is not satisfactory. For this reason, the "Rome" criteria were created to provide a better understanding and classification of FGIDs. Key Messages: Rome diagnostic criteria and recommendations should be used in the design and performance of clinical studies in the field of functional dyspepsia and irritable bowel syndrome.

Keywords: Classification; Diagnosis; Functional gastrointestinal disorders; Rome criteria; Treatment approach.
