Propranolol, a nonselective beta-adrenergic receptor antagonist, is utilized across a broad range of clinical settings, including cardiovascular, neurologic, endocrine, and psychiatric conditions. Sympathetic nervous system activity is attenuated through beta-receptor blockade, rendering propranolol effective for angina pectoris, tachyarrhythmias, hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy, and secondary prevention following myocardial infarction. Additional indications include migraine prophylaxis, essential tremor, thyrotoxicosis, portal hypertension, and infantile hemangioma. At the same time, off-label administration is common for situational or performance anxiety to mitigate autonomic symptoms such as tachycardia and tremor. Lipophilicity facilitates penetration of the central nervous system, contributing to both clinical benefits and potential neuropsychiatric adverse effects.
