Protein C and S are vitamin K–dependent glycoproteins, predominantly synthesized in the liver, that are important components of the natural anticoagulant system in the body. These glycoproteins serve as essential components in maintaining physiologic hemostasis.
A deficiency of protein C and S results in the loss of these natural anticoagulant properties, resulting in unchecked thrombin generation and thromboembolism.
