Abstract

Maya Angelou, the prolific American poet once said, 'Each time a woman stands up for herself, without knowing it possibly, without claiming it, she stands up for all women'. Indeed, we often hear similar sentiments from female political and business leaders as their motivation to succeed, inspire others and increase representation. How far then has the field of academic medicine progressed? Data indicate representation, career progression and leadership roles of female colleagues still do not match that of male colleagues 1,2 .
