Statistical evidence for non-random clustering of synaptic vesicles associated with filamentous interconnections

Brain Res. 1988 Apr 26;447(1):145-8. doi: 10.1016/0006-8993(88)90975-4.

Abstract

Synaptic vesicles were found to be non-randomly distributed in the synaptic region of nerve terminals. This was visible as an abundance of tightly clustered groups of vesicles. Two or more vesicles were interconnected by filaments far more often than could be explained by chance alignment. These could play a major role in vesicular release.
