Influence of thyroid hormones and methylthiouracil upon elastin content in the liver of rats with carbon tetrachloride-induced hepatic fibrosis

Endocrinologie. 1987 Jan-Mar;25(1):3-7.

Abstract

The effect of administration of thyroid extract and methylthiouracil upon the elastin content of the liver was investigated in healthy and CCl4-poisoned rats. Hyperthyroidism induced a decrease in liver elastin content and hypothyroidism led to an increase of liver elastin. Similar changes were found in rats with carbon tetrachloride-induced hepatic fibrosis. The possible mechanisms of these changes are discussed.
