Background: Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) is a new therapeutic tool used to treat various skin diseases in humans and animals.
Objective: To evaluate the effect of CAP in the treatment of canine acute otitis externa (AOE).
Animals: Four client-owned golden retriever dogs with bilateral AOE.
Methods and materials: After cleaning with a commercial ear cleanser, right ears (STANDARD group) were treated with an antibiotic/antifungal/corticosteroid combination and left ears (CAP group) were treated with CAP every three days for a total of four treatments. Cytological score and otitis index score (OTIS)3 were recorded for each ear on Day (D)0, D10 and D15. At D10 and D15, owners and investigators recorded an overall assessment.
Results: In both groups, OTIS3 and cytological score decreased over the study period. The overall assessment scale ranged from moderate to excellent in both groups.
Conclusions and clinical relevance: Cold atmospheric plasma treatment showed equal therapeutic effect compared with a commercial topical anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial ear treatment.
Hintergrund: Kaltes atmosphärisches Plasma (CAP) ist eine neue Möglichkeit zur Behandlung unterschiedlicher Erkrankungen von Menschen und Tieren. ZIEL: Die Evaluierung der Wirksamkeit von CAP bei der Behandlung akuter Otitis externa des Hundes (AOE).
Tiere: Vier Golden Retriever in Privatbesitz mit bilateraler AOE.
Methoden und materialien: Nach einer Reinigung mit einem kommerziellen Ohrreiniger wurden die rechten Ohren (STANDARD Gruppe) mit einer Kombination aus Antibiotikum/Antimykotikum/Kortikosteroid behandelt und die linken Ohren (CAP Gruppe) wurden alle 3 Tage für insgesamt vier Applikationen mit CAP behandelt. Die zytologischen und die Otitis Indexwerte (OTIS)3 Werte wurden für jedes Ohr am Tag (D)0, D10 und D15 festgehalten. Am D10 und D15 notierten die BesitzerInnen und die UntersucherInnen eine Gesamtbeurteilung.
Ergebnisse: In beiden Gruppen nahmen die OTIS3 und die zytologischen Werte im Verlauf der Studiendauer ab. Die insgesamte Bewertungsskala reichte in beiden Gruppen von moderat bis exzellent.
Schlussfolgerungen und klinische bedeutung: Eine Behandlung mit kaltem atmosphärischem Plasma zeigte die gleiche therapeutische Wirkung im Vergleich zu kommerzieller topischer entzündungshemmender und antimikrobieller Ohrbehandlung.

Contexte: Le plasma atmosphérique froid (CAP) est un nouvel outil thérapeutique utilisé pour traiter diverses maladies de la peau chez l'homme et l'animal.
Objectif: Évaluer l'effet du CAP dans le traitement de l'otite externe aiguë canine ANIMAUX: Quatre golden retrievers appartenant à des clients et présentant une OEA bilatérale. MÉTHODES ET MATÉRIEL: Après nettoyage avec un produit commercial, les oreilles droites (groupe STANDARD) sont traitées avec une combinaison antibiotique/antifongique/corticostéroïde et les oreilles gauches (groupe CAP) sont traitées avec du CAP tous les 3 jours pour un total de quatre traitements. Les résultats cytologiques et l'indice d'otite (OTIS)3 sont enregistrés pour chaque oreille au jour (J)0, J10 et J15. À J10 et J15, les propriétaires et les investigateurs notent l’évaluation globale. RÉSULTATS: Dans les deux groupes, les scores OTIS3 et cytologiques diminuent au cours de la période d'étude. L'échelle d'évaluation globale va de modérée à excellente dans les deux groupes.
Conclusions et pertinence clinique: Le traitement au plasma atmosphérique froid a montré un effet thérapeutique égal à celui d'un traitement topique auriculaire anti‐inflammatoire et antimicrobien commercial.
背景: 低温大気圧プラズマ(CAP)は、ヒトや動物のさまざまな皮膚疾患の治療に用いられる新しい治療手段である。 目的: 本研究の目的は、イヌの急性外耳炎(AOE)の治療におけるCAPの効果を評価することであった。 対象動物: 両側性外耳炎を有するゴールデン・レトリーバー4頭。 方法と材料: 市販のイヤークレンザーで洗浄後、右耳(STANDARD群)には抗生物質/抗真菌薬/副腎皮質ステロイドの組み合わせで、左耳(CAP群)にはCAPを3日おきに計4回投与した。試験開始0日目、10日目、15日目に各耳について細胞学的スコアおよび耳炎指標スコア(OTIS)3スコアを記録した。試験開始10日目および15日目の時点で、飼い主と調査者が総合評価を記録した。 結果: 両群ともOTIS3スコアおよび細胞学的スコアは試験期間中に低下した。総合評価スケールは両群とも中等度から良好の範囲であった。 結論と臨床的意義: 寒冷大気プラズマ治療は、市販の局所抗炎症・抗菌耳治療薬と比較して同等の治療効果を示した。.
Contexto: Plasma atmosférico frio (PAF) é uma nova ferramenta terapêutica utilizada para tratar várias doenças de pele em humanos e animais.
Objetivo: Avaliar o efeito do PAF no tratamento da otite externa aguda (OEA) em cães.
Animais: Quatro cães golden retriever de propriedade de clientes com OEA bilateral. MÉTODOS E MATERIAIS: Após a limpeza com um limpador auricular comercial, as orelhas direitas (grupo STANDARD) foram tratadas com uma combinação de antibióticos/antifúngicos/corticosteroides e as orelhas esquerdas (grupo PAF) foram tratadas com PAF a cada 3 dias em um total de quatro tratamentos. Os escores citológicos e de índice de otite (OTIS)3 foram registrados para cada orelha no Dia (D)0, D10 e D15. No D10 e D15, os tutores e pesquisadores registraram uma avaliação geral.
Resultados: Em ambos os grupos, houve diminuição do OTIS3 e do escore citológico ao longo do período do estudo. A escala de avaliação geral variou de moderada a excelente em ambos os grupos. CONCLUSÕES E RELEVÂNCIA CLÍNICA: O tratamento com plasma atmosférico frio apresentou efeito terapêutico igual ao de um tratamento auricular anti‐inflamatório e antimicrobiano tópico comercial.
INTRODUCCIÓN: El plasma atmosférico frío (CAP) es una nueva herramienta terapéutica que se utiliza para tratar diversas enfermedades de la piel en humanos y animales.
Objetivo: Evaluar el efecto del CAP en el tratamiento de la otitis externa aguda canina (AOE).
Animales: Cuatro perros golden retriever con AOE bilateral. MÉTODOS Y MATERIALES: Después de limpiar con un limpiador de oídos comercial, las orejas derechas (grupo ESTÁNDAR) se trataron con una combinación de antibiótico/antifúngico/corticosteroide y las orejas izquierdas (grupo CAP) se trataron con CAP cada 3 días durante un total de cuatro tratamientos. Se registraron las puntuaciones citológicas y del índice de otitis (OTIS)3 para cada oreja los días (D)0, D10 y D15. En los días D10 y D15, los propietarios e investigadores registraron una evaluación general.
Resultados: En ambos grupos, la puntuación OTIS3 y citológica disminuyeron durante el período de estudio. La escala de evaluación general varió de moderada a excelente en ambos grupos. CONCLUSIONES Y RELEVANCIA CLÍNICA: El tratamiento con plasma atmosférico frío mostró un efecto terapéutico igual al de un tratamiento tópico comercial antiinflamatorio y antimicrobiano para el oído.
