Palliative Ultrasound-Guided Cryoneurolysis in a Patient With Breast Cancer: A Case Report

A A Pract. 2025 May 27;19(5):e01979. doi: 10.1213/XAA.0000000000001979. eCollection 2025 May 1.

Abstract

This case details the use of ultrasound-guided cryoneurolysis for refractory chest wall pain in a patient with fungating breast cancer resulting in a significant decrease in opioid requirements and improvement in function. Cancer pain can be challenging to treat and achieving analgesic goals is often limited by medication side effects. While there is limited literature on the use of cryoneurolysis in the context of cancer pain, we found it to be a safe and effective alternative. With advances in ultrasound technology and growing technical skills, cryoneurolysis is an accessible and reliable option for improving patients' pain and quality of life.
