Functional neurological disorder is frequently seen in neurological practice. In this clinical review, we present updated knowledge about the condition. Contrary to previous assumptions, the disorder can occur independently of psychological stressors. The diagnosis can often be made with a high degree of certainty by identifying positive clinical signs. For more than a century, patients with functional neurological disorder have found themselves in no man's land, where neither somatic nor mental health services have taken full medical responsibility. Effective communication about the condition and a multidisciplinary approach can be crucial for successful treatment.
