Assessment of knowledge, availability, and practice of interventional radiation safety among dental professionals: A cross-sectional study

Abstract

Dental radiographic examinations involve low radiation doses with minimal biological risks; however, these low doses can accumulate over time, leading to potential risks. It is essential for all medical personnel, including dentists, to have an adequate understanding of the risks associated with interventional radiation exposure and the most effective strategies for personal protection. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among dental professionals unit using a 30-item questionnaire distributed via a Google form link. Multiple logistic regression to identify significant predictors of good interventional radiation knowledge. A total of 158 dental professionals took part, with a mean age of 34.7 (SD = 8.23). The females make up 50.6% and males 49.4%. Over half of the respondents indicated either never using the ionizing machine (29.1%) or using it daily (27.8%) and agreed that its use is necessary (62.0%). Only 8.9% correctly identified the annual normal background radiation exposure. Most participants reported that sufficient protective equipment is available for use with such machinery (67.1%). In addition, increasing age (AOR = 1.08, P-value = .027), having a PhD degree (AOR = 4.83, P-value = .008), and having more than 10 years of work experience (AOR = 3.03, P-value = .029) significantly predict basic knowledge of radiation exposure and usage. The findings highlight a mixed level of awareness and practice among dental professionals regarding radiation exposure and the use of ionizing machines. While a majority recognize the necessity of such equipment and report the availability of protective measures, a substantial portion lack accurate knowledge about radiation exposure limits. Importantly, increased age, higher academic qualifications, and longer work experience are significant predictors of better basic knowledge. These results emphasize the need for targeted educational interventions and continuous professional development programs to enhance radiation safety awareness across all experience levels in dental practice.
