Abstract
Analysis of the causes of death in 1041 children in all Newcastle hospitals admitting children in the period 1960 to 1966 shows that genetically determined disease makes a major contribution, 42% in this series, to the total of mortality in childhood. The findings are very similar to a previous survey made in London.
