Heat production and temperature regulation in eastern skunk cabbage

Science. 1974 Nov 22;186(4165):746-7. doi: 10.1126/science.186.4165.746.

Abstract

The spadix of Symplocarpus foetidus L. maintains an internal temperature 15 degrees to 35 degrees C above ambient air temperatures of -15 degrees to +15 degrees C. For at least 14 days it consumes oxygen at a rate comparable to that of homeothermic animals of equivalent size. Temperature regulation is accomplished by variations in respiratory rate.
