Training without reward: traditional training of pig-tailed macaques as coconut harvesters

Abstract

Macaca nemestrina, the pig-tailed macaque, is the only monkey regularly and extensively used for work. For centuries it has been trained in Southeast Asia to pick coconuts and other fruits. The training is based exclusively on punishment and avoidance of punishment.
