Abstract

Cigarette smoke alters the composition of the bronchoalveolar lavage fluids in patients with pulmonary diseases of various etiologies. Smokers have an increased number of macrophages, and thus a reactive bronchoalveolar lymphocytosis may be masked. Unlike those of non-smokers, alveolar macrophages of smokers contain intracytoplasmic inclusions of the lipofuscin family.
