KIE: A conference on legal and ethical issues in research on senile dementia of the Alzheimer's type was held by the National Institute on Aging on 23-24 November 1981. The presentations, summarized in this article, focused on the controversial problem of doing nontherapeutic, invasive research on patients who are frequently incompetent to give informed consent.
