Ballistic trauma to the abdomen in a rural setting: case report

J Trauma. 1994 Nov;37(5):853-4. doi: 10.1097/00005373-199411000-00026.

Abstract

Although penetrating mechanisms such as gunshots and stabbings are responsible for the majority of injuries in urban settings, blunt mechanisms are the norm in rural areas. We present a case of a young man in a rural area who was struck by a metal fragment while splitting firewood. This seemingly low-velocity mechanism was found to have caused significant penetrating trauma.
