Fine needle aspiration cytology is considered an adequate method fulfilling the requirements for an early, minimal invasive, and simple to perform diagnostic technique for malignancies. Its establishment in human medicine is the basis for propagation of this method in veterinary medicine. This paper describes the technique of performing a fine needle aspiration and gives guidelines for the interpretation of cytologic samples. Indications, limitations and contraindications of aspiration cytology are discussed.
