E M Nazareno. J Philipp Dent Assoc. .

Abstract

Oral implantology involves the surgical insertion of materials and devices to restore the partially or totally edentulous patient to full function. Implants are made of various biocompatible metals and come in varying designs. Blade and cylinder implants are the most common. Blade implants, however, have been in use for a longer period of time and have statistically shown to have a high success rate. They are also less expensive and can be inserted with the use of instruments of dental practitioners. Implants have allowed patients to improve both their appearance and self- confidence. It has also given them more freedom in enjoying a greater variety of food and improved speech.
