Governance of Academic Medical Centers Is Indeed a Complex and Unique Operation.
Guzick DS and Wilson DE. Acad Med 2018. PMID 28906264
As academic medical centers (AMCs) have extended their operations into their communities, partnered with new organizations, and developed new modes of operation to achieve their missions, new governance approaches are required. Chari and colleagues, in this issue of Academic Medicine, describe the development and application of criteria to evaluate governance options for the University of California (UC), which has a number of public AMCs, almost all of which are components of individual UC universities. ...

Academic medical centers and medical research: the challenges ahead.
Cohen JJ and Siegel EK. JAMA 2005. PMID 16174695
Although the present era offers more promise for medical research progress than ever before, academic medical centers also face more daunting challenges for the conduct of medical research: high expectations by the public for a steady stream of lifesaving discoveries, news about financial conflicts of interest and scientific misconduct by researchers that threatens to erode public trust in academic institutions, tensions between the cultural norms of academe and industry that cloud their growing partnerships, obstacles to recruiting and retaining physician-scientists, constrained funding sources and increasing costs of research, and the need to transform the academic reward structure and culture to encourage collaboration and adapt to the new "team science." The interconnectedness of these challenges magnifies their difficulties and importance. Maintaining academic medicine's integrity and effectiveness in pursuing its vital research mission will be a crucial challenge for medical schools and teaching hospitals in the years ahead....

Reengineering academic medical centers: reengineering academic values?
Korn D. Acad Med 1996. PMID 9177635
Academic medicine is entering an era of profound, unsettling change resulting not simply from the drastic transformation of the health care marketplace but more fundamentally from the chronic, growing gap between academic medicine's seemingly insatiable demand for total resources and the supply of resources that society is willing to provide. To examine this problem, the author reviews the major factors that have shaped the development of academic medical centers (AMCs) since World War II and are now the roots of their vulnerability. ...

The Present and Future Challenges Facing Urology Departments at Academic Health Centers.
McCormick BJ and Pruthi RS. Urology 2017 - Review. PMID 28153591
Academic health centers (ACHs) represent the pinnacle of health care by providing innovative clinical care, cutting-edge research, and premier education. However, recent changes in health care put their tripartite mission at risk. The coming years will bring immense change to AHCs as they adjust to new market conditions impacting the 3 distinct elements of their mission. ...
