[Antidepressant and tolerance: Determinants and management of major side effects].
David DJ and Gourion D. Encephale 2016 - Review. PMID 27423475 French.
Antidepressant therapy aims to reach remission of depressive symptoms while reducing the complications and risks of relapse. ...Among the causes responsible for weight gain under antidepressant therapy, monoamine neurotransmission still plays an important role. ...

Weight gain and antidepressants.
Fava M. J Clin Psychiatry 2000 - Review. PMID 10926053 Free article.
Weight gain is a relatively common problem during both acute and long-term treatment with antidepressants, and it is an important contributing factor to noncompliance. This article will review the literature with regard to the relative risk for weight gain of antidepressants. It appears that tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) and perhaps monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) may be more likely to cause weight gain than the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or the newer antidepressants, with the exception of mirtazapine, which may be placed between the SSRIs and the TCAs in terms of relative risk for weight gain. ...

Efficacy and safety of antidepressant's use in the treatment of depressive episodes in bipolar disorder - review of research.
Antosik-Wójcińska AZ, et al. Psychiatr Pol 2015 - Review. PMID 26909398 Free article.
In BD type II or BD spectrum, antidepressant monotherapy is allowed in severe depression. In bipolar disorder type I and in case of phase change after antidepressants use in the past, use of antidepressants should be very cautious. Antidepressants are contraindicated in rapid cycling and in mixed episodes. Further work is needed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of antidepressants use....

Pharmacological approaches to the challenge of treatment-resistant depression
Ionescu DF, et al. Dialogues Clin Neurosci 2015 - Review. PMID 26246787 Free PMC article.
Although monoaminergic antidepressants revolutionized the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) over a half-century ago, approximately one third of depressed patients experience treatment-resistant depression (TRD). ...Finally, we briefly review emerging targets for antidepressant drug discovery and the novel effects of rapidly acting antidepressants, with a focus on ketamine....

Effectiveness of Supplementary Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Pharmacotherapy-Resistant Depression: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Nakagawa A, et al. J Clin Psychiatry 2017 - Clinical Trial. PMID 28252882 Free article.
OBJECTIVE: Antidepressant medication is efficacious in the treatment of depression, but not all patients improve with antidepressant medication alone. ...Outpatients aged 20-65 years with pharmacotherapy-resistant depression (taking antidepressant medications for ≥ 8 weeks, 17-item GRID-Hamilton Depression Rating Scale [GRID-HDRS₁₇] score ≥ 16, Maudsley Staging Method for treatment-resistant depression score ≥ 3, and DSM-IV criteria for major depressive disorder) were randomly assigned (1:1) to CBT combined with TAU or to TAU alone. ...

Comparative efficacy and acceptability of first-generation and second-generation antidepressants in the acute treatment of major depression: protocol for a network meta-analysis.
Furukawa TA, et al. BMJ Open 2016. PMID 27401359 Free PMC article.
INTRODUCTION: Many antidepressants are indicated for the treatment of major depression. Two network meta-analyses have provided the most comprehensive assessments to date, accounting for both direct and indirect comparisons; however, these reported conflicting interpretation of results. Here, we present a protocol for a systematic review and network meta-analysis aimed at updating the evidence base and comparing all second-generation as well as selected first-generation antidepressants in terms of efficacy and acceptability in the acute treatment of major depression. ...
