Beneficial Effects of the Amino Acid Glycine.
Pérez-Torres I, et al. Mini Rev Med Chem 2017 - Review. PMID 27292783
To exert its actions, glycine binds to different receptors. The GlyR anion channel is the most studied receptor for glycine. ...Although at high-doses, glycine may cause toxic effects, further studies are needed to investigate the safe range of usage of this aminoacid and to test the diverse routes of administration....

Serine, but not glycine, supports one-carbon metabolism and proliferation of cancer cells.
Labuschagne CF, et al. Cell Rep 2014. PMID 24813884 Free article.
Restriction of exogenous glycine or depletion of the glycine cleavage system did not impede proliferation. In the absence of serine, uptake of exogenous glycine was unable to support nucleotide synthesis. Indeed, higher concentrations of glycine inhibited proliferation. Under these conditions, glycine was converted to serine, a reaction that would deplete the one-carbon pool. ...

New therapeutic strategy for amino acid medicine: glycine improves the quality of sleep.
Bannai M and Kawai N. J Pharmacol Sci 2012 - Review. PMID 22293292 Free article.
Glycine is a non-essential amino acid that has indispensable roles in both excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmission via N-methyl-D-aspartate type glutamate receptors and glycine receptors, respectively. ...Oral administration of glycine to rats was found to induce a significant increase in the plasma and cerebrospinal fluid glycine concentrations and a significant decrease in the core body temperature associated with an increase in cutaneous blood flow. ...

Dosage Effect of Zinc Glycine Chelate on Zinc Metabolism and Gene Expression of Zinc Transporter in Intestinal Segments on Rat.
Huang D, et al. Biol Trace Elem Res 2016. PMID 26507438
The focus of this research was to investigate the dosage effect of zinc glycine chelate (Zn-Gly) on zinc metabolism and the gene expression of zinc transporters in intestinal segments. ...

Consensus Conference Findings on Supragingival and Subgingival Air Polishing
Cobb CM, et al. Compend Contin Educ Dent 2017. PMID 28156118
A consensus conference was convened to evaluate and address issues of safety and efficacy when using glycine powder in an air-powder jet device for supra- and subgingival applications during dental prophylaxis and periodontal maintenance. The conference reported the following conclusions: 1) Supra- and subgingival air polishing using glycine powder is safe and effective for removal of biofilms from natural tooth structure and restorative materials; 2) there is no evidence of soft-tissue abrasion when using glycine powder in an air-polishing device; 3) in periodontal probing depths of 1 mm to 4 mm, glycine-powder air polishing, using a standard air-polishing nozzle, is more effective at removing subgingival biofilm than manual or ultrasonic instruments; and 4) at probing depths of 5 mm to 9 mm, using a subgingival nozzle, glycine powder air polishing is more effective at removing subgingival biofilm than manual or ultrasonic instrumentation. ...

Effects of systemic administration of kynurenic acid and glycine on renal haemodynamics and excretion in normotensive and spontaneously hypertensive rats.
Bądzyńska B, et al. Eur J Pharmacol 2014. PMID 25263305
Both NMDA receptor and kynurenic acid (KYNA), a glycine-site NMDA receptor antagonist, are present in the kidney yet their functional role remains unclear. ...KYNA given alone (150mgkg(-1) iv) or during infusion of glycine at 1gkg(-1)h(-1) iv (G+K) increased or decreased RBF, respectively, in both S-D and SHR. ...

Effect of N-acetyl cysteine and glycine supplementation on growth performance, glutathione synthesis, and antioxidative ability of grass carp, Ctenopharyngodon idella.
Xie S, et al. Fish Physiol Biochem 2017 - Clinical Trial. PMID 28124206
Four practical diets were formulated: control, control + 0.2% NAC, control + 0.5% glycine, and control + 0.2% NAC + 0.5% glycine. ...Supplementation of NAC plus glycine significantly increased the feed efficiency. Glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and γ-glutamine cysteine synthase (γ-GCS) in plasma were significantly increased with the supplementation of NAC plus glycine. ...

Efficacy of glycine powder air-polishing combined with scaling and root planing in the treatment of periodontitis and halitosis: A randomised clinical study.
Caygur A, et al. J Int Med Res 2017 - Clinical Trial. PMID 28425827 Free PMC article.
Patients were randomly assigned to scaling and root planing (SRP) or SRP + glycine powder air-polishing (GPAP). For both groups, the plaque index, gingival index, pocket depth, bleeding on probing, and clinical attachment level scores were recorded at baseline and 1 month. ...
